We’ve had over 30 guests on our podcast so far this year, recommending a whole range of brilliant business books. And as it’s holiday time, we’ve compiled our top picks from this list. Happy reading!
Opportunity is Now Here
his week’s guest is Marc Lewis, dean and founder of the School of Communication Arts 2.0 (SCA). The SCA is currently the world’s most eminent portfolio school as well as being a social enterprise, taking 36 students each year through a 12-month journey in Marc’s studio.
One in three of these students receive a scholarship, some receive bursaries, others self-fund. The school has a network of about 1000 teacher/mentors who help write the curriculum and deliver the learning experience. In Marc’s own words, “the SCA 2.0 is kind of an apprenticeship model meets a university model meets a bit of a circus, a bit of a fun fair.”
From earning $200,000 per month from sex lines, to creating ‘Whore’ magazine, to founding South Africa’s first comedy club, to claiming the first video banner ads (which he sold to WPP for just under £20m), Marc has not had a conventional career history!

Advocating for women’s advancement at work is integral for improving financial results, gender balance, and diversity in our workplaces and leadership teams. Yet data from the Working Mother Research Institute finds that, while 48% of men say they have received detailed information on career paths to P&L jobs in the past 24 months, just 15% of women report the same. And, while 54% of men had a career discussion with a mentor or sponsor in the past 24 months, only 39% of women did.
How do you know when you’re talking to a job applicant you should hire? Start by asking the right interview questions. Good questions are unexpected and thus difficult to script answers for – they’re not just the common interview questions every candidate knows to prepare for – like “tell me about yourself,” “walk me through your resume,” or “why do your want to leave your current company?” To help hiring managers and human resources determine whether the person sitting across the table will become a top employee, we’re sharing seven insightful job interview questions to work into your interview process.
Timing is everything. But we don’t know much about timing itself. Timing, it’s often assumed, is an art; in When, Pink shows that timing is in fact a science. Drawing on a rich trove of research from psychology, biology and economics, Pink reveals how best to live, work and succeed. How can we use the hidden patterns of the day to build the ideal schedule? Why do certain breaks dramatically improve student test scores? When should you have your first coffee of the day? Why is singing in time with other people as good for us as exercise? And what is the ideal time to quit a job, switch careers, or get married?
Originally written only for his personal consumption, Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations has become a key text in the understanding of Roman Stoic philosophy. This Penguin Classics edition is translated with notes by Martin Hammond and an introduction by Diskin Clay. Written in Greek by an intellectual Roman emperor without any intention of publication, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius offer a wide range of fascinating spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the leader struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe.
